Running Epiphany

My lower back was tense. Standing on the sidelines of our first soccer game of the day, I realized what my brain & body were saying. "Take us for a run, we'll feel better."

A runner. I am.

Running

"Long Run" - 150% of normal weekly day run.

Beginners: Concentrate on time ran, not distance.

Shoes: 200-400 miles a pair. Then GET NEW ONES! Don't use them to walk around town. Running only.

Once exceeding 60 minutes of running, body needs fuel during the run.

Rest - it's good. My best runs are after a few days off. The more I read on it (because I was against rest!), the more I learn how the body uses that time to heal and restore muscle.

Core work is important. Your torso has to hold itself up while your lower body is pumping away. The stronger it is, the more "self sufficient" it is at carrying it's own weight.

Gear I can't do without

8 years of running, I've got a few OCD momento's I cannot run without. Should my running bag fail to throwup such items, it can set my well planned and much anticipated run into a foul start. Here they are:

Eclipse gum. Keeps my mouth from drying out and can get me through a few handfuls of those peanut M&M's I consume for fuel at miles 3 & 6. As my time increases, I carry an extra piece.

Carmex. The best lip moisturizer ever.

iPod. I, always a music runner, have developed a slight insight to the fact that maybe... I might be able to survive without it. But alas, a few moments spent developing the perfect playlist, I am once again convinced of the necessity of my tunes.

Wide based running shoes. I have a big foot for a woman and I don't like any restriction in the ball of my foot when I run or walk. I don't like the type of shoe that has the severely cut mid section because it tends to make my ankle roll. I like a well planted, broad based running shoe that allows my size 10 foot to expand as it rolls through.

Visor. Ahh the visor. Once I tried a hat - to keep my hair dry from the rain. Um, heard of sweat? Well I SWEAT. Like a guy. My hair was soaked anyway from the sweat and my head was HOT. So I stick to a visor, which also soaks up my sweat as it rolls off, keeps it from my eyes and the top of my head stays cooler.

Ear muffs. My ears hurt inside from wind that hits them. If sweat is dripping into them, the wind makes it colder. So I used to run in my daughters red Winnie the Pooh earmuffs (yes, really) & then switched to no name black ones.
